Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) refers to brain injury resulting from reduced blood and oxygen flow to a baby's brain near the time of birth. HIE affects up to 12,000 newborns each year in the U.S. Half of affected infants have a bad outcome including death, cerebral palsy and cognitive impairment despite receiving hypothermia, the only available treatment.

Neonatal encephalopathy is a heterogeneous, clinically defined syndrome characterized by disturbed neurologic function in the earliest days of life in an infant born at or beyond 35 weeks of gestation, manifested by a reduced level of consciousness or seizures, often accompanied by difficulty with initiating and maintaining respiration, and by depression of tone and reflexes [ 1 ].

Treating perinatal asphyxia with theophylline at birth helps to reduce the severity of renal dysfunction in term neonates. Acta Paediatrica. 2016. This was an RCT in 160 full-term babies with perinatal asphyxia and encephalopathy. Babies, who … Continue reading → asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy in mature infants In adults, the brain is about 2% of body weight and receives about 15% of the cardiac output.

D espite continued advances in neonatal medicine, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains one of the leading causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality.1 The current gold standard of treatment for this condition—therapeutic (2018). Biochemical and clinical predictors of hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy after perinatal asphyxia.

In the neonate, the lack of oxygen may lead to multi-organ failure with brain involvement as the major organ of concern (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy [HIE]). In most cases of HIE, injury to other major organ systems occurs, including the heart, kidney, lung, and liver.

2021-04-12 · It is now known that there are multiple potential causal pathways that lead to cerebral palsy in term infants, and the signs and symptoms of neonatal encephalopathy may range from mild to severe, depending on the nature and timing of the brain injury. The objective of this review was to determine the effects of fluid restriction on short-term (mortality within the first 28 days of life, grade of hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, electrolyte disturbances, renal function, seizure activity) and long-term outcomes (death during the first year of life, CT or MRI changes, or severe neurodevelopmental disability at or equal to 12 months of age or 2015-02-16 · Birth asphyxia often causes hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a form of neonatal brain damage that can lead to cerebral palsy (CP), epilepsy, and other disabilities.

Randomised controlled trials evaluating therapeutic hypothermia in term and late preterm newborns with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy were identified by searching the Oxford Database of Perinatal Trials, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL NEONATAL ASPHYXIA ¾ The incidence of perinatal asphyxia is usually related with gestational age and birth weight: 6‰ at term newborn and much higher at premature babies under 36 weeks of gestation.

In term babies, it is 10% of body weight and uses energy not only to maintain electrical activity but also for growth.

Cases were categorized by admission CTG patterns (normal or abnormal) and by the presence of asphyxia (cord pH, <7.00; base deficit, ≥12 mmol/L). Neonatal encephalopathy (NE) following perinatal asphyxia (PA) has been known to have an impact on both short- and long-term development of its survivors. Estimates of the incidence of NE vary between 1 and 8 per 1000 live births (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Task force on Neonatal Encephalopathy, 2003).
